Why Teams Often Skip User Research (and Why I Don’t Anymore)

Sep 9, 2025

When I first started working in design, I was surprised by how often user research got brushed aside. Everyone knew it was important, but when deadlines loomed or budgets tightened, it was the first thing cut.

I’ve seen a few common patterns:

  1. “We don’t have the time.”
Deadlines are always tight. It’s tempting to skip research so we can just get the thing built. But I’ve learned that skipping research doesn’t actually save time, it just shifts the problems downstream. Fixing mistakes after launch always takes longer than preventing them in the first place.

  2. “We don’t have the budget.”
Research can sound like an expensive luxury, especially to folks outside design. But in reality, even lightweight methods like five quick user interviews can uncover insights that save thousands in development costs.

  3. “We already know our users.”
I’ve heard this one a lot. Teams think they know their audience because they’ve been working in the industry for years. The truth? Every time I’ve run actual research, we’ve uncovered blind spots that challenged our assumptions.

  4. “That’s not how we work here.”
Culture plays a huge role. If research isn’t baked into the process, it can feel like you’re fighting uphill just to justify it. I’ve had to build trust slowly sharing small wins, showing how one quick study led to a smarter design decision.

What I’ve Learned

The biggest lesson? User research doesn’t have to be this massive, formal, months-long thing. Small, scrappy, and consistent efforts make a difference. Every time I’ve managed to bring real user voices into the room, the conversation shifted from opinion battles to evidence-based decisions.

If your team struggles to make time for research, start small. Run a quick usability test. Do a couple of customer calls. Show the highlights in a short video. Once people see the impact, it’s much easier to get buy-in.

Because at the end of the day, designing without research is like driving with your eyes closed. You might still get somewhere, but it probably won’t be where you intended.
